The role of communication skills development in the training of sports instructors
Abstract
Focusing on verbal communicative skills, the paper explores what role may be played by communicative competence in the training of sports educators. It aims to find out what level of importance physical education teachers and coaches attach to the development of their communicative skills in the interest of adequate communicative behaviour. Concomitantly, it examines which specific communicative skills and associated elements of knowledge need to be mastered. For learning about this, the author also relies on her previous questionnaire-based (H. Tomesz 2019a, 2019b) and interview-based studies (H. Tomesz 2020) about the topic. The paper defines the notion of communicative competence and describes its function in sports education. It assesses the possible role of communicative competence development in the training of sports educators. Based on attitudes to communication reported by sportspersons and sports educators, it demonstrates which areas of sports education may benefit particularly from an emphasis on efficient communication.
